In an incredible finish on the 37th hole, WA’s Kirsten Rudgeley is the 2021 English Amateur Champion. It was a rollercoaster of a match with Rudgeley challenged by Prestbury’s Bel Wardle who had led for a large portion of the match.

With no sign of nerves, cool customer Rudgeley made an outstanding putt on the 36th hole to bring the score back to all square and a play-off. Rudgeley and Wardle both drove well on the 37th, but Rudgeley gave herself the advantage chipping onto the green in three. Wardle putted out for five leaving Kirsten with a tricky putt which dropped nicely to cheers from the crowd to secure the 2021 English Amateur Title.

Kirsten shared, “It is an awesome feeling to lift this trophy. I am proud of how I held myself together in some tough situations. Even when I was three down I felt like I was still playing well and I had to keep believing it was anyone’s game to win.”

“It was awesome to have mum here with me as I went round, she is a great support to me. To have two West Australians in the final of the English Amateur is a first. Tom (Addy) fought hard for his match and played really well.”

Joondalup’s Tom Addy put in an inspiring performance to narrowly miss out on the title to Stoke Park’s John Gough. Gough was 3UP , and stretched his lead to 5UP in the afternoon round, but spirited seventeen year old Addy didn’t let that phase him, fighting back. Gough was 4UP at the final turn, looking confident and the putts just not dropping for Addy.

Addy had a win on the 11th after Gough had some difficulty in the trees, and then holed a huge putt on the 12th to get back in the game. Rolling in another birdie on the 14th, Gough was nervously back at 1UP coming into 17. Frustratingly, Gough missed his putt on 17, taking the boys into the final stretch.

It all came down to the 36th hole, which the boys both played solidly to square giving Gough the 2021 Title.

Addy shared, “I’m very proud of how I played and kept going right to the end. A few too many putts slid by, and full credit to John who was a deserved winner. I have learnt so much over the course of the week which will work towards making me a better player.”
